Plateau's Phenakistoscope
In 1832, Belgian physicist Joseph Plateau and his sons introduced the phenakistoscope ("spindle viewer").
It was also invented independently in the same year by Simon von Stampfer of Vienna, Austria, who called his invention a stroboscope.
